Overview
In GFI LanGuard, devices in the network tree may appear in black or blue text and may also have italics formatting. These visual cues convey specific information about the devices' properties and connection status. Black text is the default display for most devices, while blue text indicates that a machine is detected as a virtual machine. Italics formatting is applied when a device is considered unreachable during the last agent scan attempt.
Solution
-
Black Text Formatting:
- Devices are displayed in black text by default, unless otherwise flagged by LanGuard.
- If LanGuard does not detect that a device is a virtual machine (due to scan limitations or incomplete profiles), it will remain in black text.
-
Blue Text Formatting:
- Devices are displayed in blue text when LanGuard successfully detects them as virtual machines.
- To confirm whether a device is recognized as a virtual machine:
- Navigate to
Dashboard > Overview > Computer Details
. - Look for the
Is Virtual Machine
flag under the computer details when the machine is selected. If this is present, it should be displayed in blue text. - Also, hover over the machine name in the computer tree to see the text "Computer is a virtual machine."
- Navigate to
- Note: Some scan profiles do not perform virtualization checks, so a virtual machine may still display in black text if this check is skipped or fails.
-
Italics Formatting:
- Devices displayed in italics indicate that the device was considered unreachable during the last agent scan attempt. This could happen due to:
- The device being powered off or physically offline.
- Network-related issues, such as:
- The hostname not resolving due to DNS problems.
- The device not responding to pings or other connectivity checks.
- The italics formatting reflects LanGuard's perspective that the device is "offline," even if it may be technically online.
- This formatting will clear upon restarting the LanGuard application and will reappear if the connectivity issues persist during subsequent scans.
- Devices displayed in italics indicate that the device was considered unreachable during the last agent scan attempt. This could happen due to:
