Overview
The GFI LanGuard 12 Server Service or GFI LanGuard 12 Server Update services fail to start or unexpectedly stop, and Central Management Server (CMS) is not synchronizing.
Solution
The LanGuard Central Management Server (CMS) can occasionally run into corruption errors after being installed; this is the most common root cause for the issue above. The corruption causes the CMS Windows services failures and unexpected behavior, which leads to CMS not synchronizing with the LanGuard servers.
In rare cases, the root cause might be a problem with the credentials or an environmental setting messing with the services.
Services and Credentials Verification
- Run services.msc, locate the GFI LanGuard 12 Server Service or GFI LanGuard 12 Server Update services, and verify that the account configured for the services has the correct permissions to actually run the services. In most cases, the default setting using the Local Service Account should be enough.
- Verify that there are no restrictions on this account via environment-specific variables, such as changes to the Group Policies or permissions.
If you find a credential problem, correct it using the account with enough permissions to run the services. If the issue persists, proceed with the steps below.
Windows Event Logs Analysis
Clues for the CMS Windows services failures due to environmental settings can be found in the Windows Application Event Logs. Follow the steps below to locate and analyze the error.
- Press Windows + R keys together and type
eventvwr.msc
in the textbox. - Expand Windows Logs > Select Application.
- Locate the time of the attempted service start and find the error.
- Troubleshoot the issue based on the exact error message and the information available.
The CMS Installation Repairing
The Windows error may be vague, like the error message 1053, which states, ‘The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.’ It is an indicator of corruption in such cases, and it is better to repair or reinstall the Central Management Server.
- Check if you are on the latest release of the LanGuard CMS. If you aren't, upgrade to the latest version. Make sure to verify all the requirements and follow all the steps.
- If you are already using the latest version of the product, repair the Central Management Server or uninstall CMS from the control panel and reinstall it.
Note that the solution provided in this article only works for GFI LanGuard 12 versions or later.
Testing
Verify the services are normally starting. To check the synchronization, run a scan on the GFI LanGuard server - synchronization should be performed automatically once the scan completes. Then navigate to the Configuration tab -> Configurations -> Central Management Server and check the Synchronization status.
