Resolving 'Agent failed to communicate with the GFI LanGuard server on Port 1072' Error from the Agent Diagnostics Tool

Overview

You are having trouble with scans, remediation and deploying patches to clients, and the GFI LanGuard Agent Diagnostics tool (Troubleshooter) finds out the communication problems: '- agent gent failed to communicate with the GFI LanGuard server on port 1072. Verify that the firewall on the GFI LanGuard server allows incoming connections on port 1072'.

Solution

The error above indicates that the agent is unable to communicate with the server. Despite the error wording, this root cause may be the other required ports being blocked, necessary services not running, or network problems. There are multiple possible reasons for such a situation:

  1. A firewall might be blocking the required ports. Review if there are firewall rules to allow connections to all the ports listed in our guide. 
  2. Check whether Windows Management Instrumentation is allowed on the target machine via Windows Firewall > Inbound Rules > Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI-In).
  3. The communication server (Apache) on the GFI LanGuard server might be down. In such a scenario, the GFI LanGuard console would display the message Communication server not running. If this is the case, follow the diagnosis and solution steps from the corresponding article.
  4. There might be names resolving and network connectivity problems - Verify Required Network Connectivity and Security Permissions for GFI LanGuard Operations.

Run the GFI LanGuard Agent Diagnostics tool (Troubleshooter) again. If you are still getting this message,  to resolve the error, perform the following steps:

  1. Ensure the system is presenting the correct IP address and port for communicating with the agents:
    1. Launch GFI LanGuard console and go to Configuration > Agents Management > Agents Settings.
    2. If the Address is set toDefault, change it to the actual server IP address.
    3. Check the TCP port, which is 1072 (for LanGuard 11 - 1070). Make sure your firewall allows inbound connections

  2. Ensure that the GFI LanGuard server and the client computer have enough free disk space on the C drive.

  3. Ensure that all required services are running following the Required settings to scan a machine and successfully install missing patches using the GFI LanGuard article.

  4. If you are using the WSUS server for the patch repository, ensure that the UNC path is being used; check this under Configuration > Patch Auto-download > Patch Repository.

  5. Antivirus software can lead to unexpected LanGuard behavior, verify and configure proper exclusions.

 

Testing

Run the GFI LanGuard Agent Diagnostics tool and verify that the error is no longer displayed. If the issue persists, contact the Support Team.
