This article contains terminology and abbreviations that are widely used with LanGuard.

Term | Definition |
LanGuard server | LanGuard main application. Occasionally, this term can refer to the machine where the LanGuard main application is installed. |
LanGuard console | LanGuard main application Windows Graphical User Interface. |
Central Management Server (CMS) | An optional component deployed separately or along with the LanGuard server, a Web console that unifies multiple LanGuard installations for reporting purposes. |
LanGuard Agent(s) | Enable data processing and auditing on target machines; once an audit is finished, the result is sent to the LanGuard server. |
Relay Agent | LanGuard Agents configured as Relay Agents download program updates, patches, and vulnerability definitions directly from the LanGuard server or upstream Relay and serve them to the Agents on client machines. |
Attendant Service | Windows Service responsible for managing all the modules/plugins. |
LNSSCommunicator | DCOM engine being used for communications and to enumerate required information. |
Remediation | Manually or automatically fixing vulnerabilities, deploying Microsoft and third-party patches and updates, installing or removing custom software on network computers. |
Scanning | A process of gathering information on the network and running various checks on target machines to identify system and network weaknesses via a comprehensive vulnerability definitions database, with tests based on OVAL, CVE, and SANS Top 20 vulnerability assessment guidelines. |
Scanning Profiles | Collections of tests and vulnerability checks used to retrieve (only) the desired information from the scan targets. |
Scanning Profile Editor | This editor enables you to create new and to modify existing scanning profiles. |

FQDN | Fully Qualified Domain Name: An FQDN is the most complete domain name that identifies a host or server.

WMI | Windows Management Instrumentation. |
RPC | Remote Procedure Call. |
SMB | Server Message Block (a.k.a. File and Printer Sharing). |
OS | Operating System. |
PC | Personal Computer. |
TCP | Transmission Control Protocol. |
UDP | User Datagram Protocol. |
DNS | Domain Name System - translates domain names into the numerical IP addresses, while Reverse DNS translates IP addresses into domain names. |
DCOM | Distributed Component Object Model. |
WoL | Wake on LAN. |
