Recording Issues Using Windows Problem Steps Recorder

Overview

This article explains the process of using the built-in Windows Problem Steps Recorder tool to record issues or undesired behavior for sending to the Support Team.

Prerequisites

  • Windows 7 and above / Windows Server 2008 and above

Solution

While troubleshooting, it is often helpful to visualize the issue as well as the steps which lead to it. Current versions of Windows out-of-the-box contain the Problem Steps Recorder (PSR) which can be used to create a series of screenshots by recording the exact steps you took when the problem occurred. PSR doesn’t record text that you type (such as a password), except for function and shortcut keys.

  1. Press the Start buttonstart.jpg and select Windows Accessories > Steps Recorder (in Windows 10 / Windows Server), or Accessories > Problem Steps Recorder (in Windows 7 or Windows 8.1).
  2. Select Start Record.
  3. Go through the steps to reproduce the issue for sharing with GFI Support Team.
    • psr.exe automatically takes a screenshot whenever a mouse button or the keyboard is used.
    • You can add comments for steps by clicking on the Add Comment button.
    • You can pause and resume the recording at any time.
  4. Once the issue has been reproduced, click Stop Record.
  5. Review the record of the steps you followed to make sure it shows what you want it to show. Select Save, enter a file name and save the recording to disk.
  6. Provide the saved file to GFI Support Team along with other troubleshooting files and logs.

Note: The default number of screen captures is 25. If you need to record more than that, increase this number by selecting the down arrow next to the Help button > Settings > Number of recent screen captures to store.
