Resolving 'The network name cannot be found' Remediation Error

Overview

The GFI LanGuard server remediation of the client machine keeps failing with 'The network name cannot be found' error when deploying updates.

Solution

There are several possible causes for 'The network name cannot be found' remediation error. The most common root cause is that LanGuard is unable to resolve the client hostname to the corresponding IP address, but environmental network or security issues or corrupted installation can lead to this error too.

  1. Verify the Required Network Connectivity and Security Permissions. All of these are equally important; without them, operations will fail. Confirm the absence of security blocks with your network and security teams.
  2. Ping the client machine by hostname, verify which IP address is shown, and compare with the IP address for this machine shown under the GFI LanGuard console Dashboard tab in Computer Tree. If the IP address does not match, rescan the client machine using the Hardware Audit or Full Scan scanning profile, updating the IP address in GFI LanGuard for the client computer.
  3. If the LanGuard server has several network interface cards, the wrong one can be used for agent deployment or remediation. Disable these network interface cards locally and run a localhost scan using the HW audit in LanGuard to update the correct IP address.
  4. Make sure NETBIOS is configured on the client machine.

Testing

Repeat the remediation and verify whether the error is gone.

If the issue persists, this may indicate a corrupted installation. Corresponding internal process termination and similar errors may be found in lanss_vxxx_remediation.csv and corresponding .bak files in %Data%\GFI\LanGuard 12\DebugLogs\ folder.

In such cases, it is recommended to reinstall the LanGuard server, strictly ensuring all the requirements and following the installation steps, or reach out to GFI LanGuard Support.
